“Do it once – do it well” is the mantra of Rotary’s Pride of Workmanship awards and for five Mackay employees, it’s that attitude that has secured them a 2011 Sunrise Rotary Pride of Workmanship award.

The awards look to acknowledge people who display outstanding qualities in their approach, attitude and dedication to their vocation as well as commitment to service.

This year’s recipients include Graphic Designer Kerry McNeill, Business trainee Rachel Casey, Business Services Officer Karissa AhWong, Senior I-T officer Nathan Ridge and Hose Fitter Bruce Shenfield.

Sunrise Rotary President Liz Springall said the awards are recognition for those who strive for excellence in their chosen field.

“It is important we applaud employees who go that extra mile in their daily work,” she said.

“The five recipients are certainly talented, hard working and a real credit to their employers.”

Hose fitter Bruce Shenfield, who previously worked in supermarkets, joined Hose Corp in 2005 and in that time has made an indelible mark on the company, with his ability to adapt to all situations and earn the respect of many of his peers

Ms Springall said it was important to foster employee-employer relationships and promote a sense of community pride in individual achievement.

“These awards give Rotary the opportunity to be involved in the business community and encourage staff to embrace the importance of doing things well,” she said.

Sunrise Rotary Club of Mackay has tipped in $1,000 in the ongoing fight to eradicate Polio from throughout the world.
The contribution comes as Grafton Rotarian Rob Byrne continues his arduous trek on a bicycle to Cairns in the “End Polio Now Bike Ride" to raise awareness and much needed funds to combat the disease.

Mr Byrne was presented with the funds at the club’s weekly Friday morning breakfast meeting.
The long serving Grafton Rotarian, who lost a close school friend to Polio, sold his business and most of his belongings to fund the charity bike ride.

“I am very passionate about seeing this disease eradicated from the world,” he said.
Sunrise Rotary President Liz Springwall said the club’s members had no hesitation in supporting the worthwhile cause.
“We realise how lucky we are and the donation is a small tangible way of helping,” she said.

“Rob’s story and his commitment is truly admirable.”

Rotary International has spent 25 years battling to eradicate the tenacious disease, which currently infects and paralyses an average of 1,000 children worldwide.

Philanthropist Bill and Melinda Gates contribute about $355 million to support immunisations in developing countries matched by Rotary’s drive to raise $200 million.

Mr Byrne has raised about $21,000 on his solo ride to date, which concludes in Cairns in mid October. He covers about 40 kilometres a day on his specially designed bicycle, drinking upwards of one litre of water every 20 minutes.

“It’s lucky I enjoy long bike rides,” he quipped

THE only thing missing from Mayor Col Meng's outfit was a few sequins.

The self-confessed ABBA fan launched this year's Mayor's Charity Ball yesterday, revealing that the event will have a Mamma Mia theme.

That's right, those who attend the ball on May 7, at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre, will be wearing skin-tight, sequined jumpsuits or anything that will get them in the dancing mood.

The ball is organised each year by Mackay Sunrise Rotary Club. Over the past six years it has raised more than $180,000, with all proceeds going directly to local not-for-profit organisations.

“It is one of the best nights on the social calendar,” Cr Meng said.

“It continues to provide valuable assistance to local charities but it is also an opportunity for the local community to celebrate a great night out.”

Cr Meng said Sunrise Rotary should be congratulated on all their preparations for the ball, which takes up to 12 months to organise.

Renowned ABBA tribute band BABBA will perform on the night as guests are transported back to the success of the Swedish supergroup in a show of great costumes, Swedish accents and fun-filled action on the dance floor.

About 30 items will go under the hammer in a series of live and silent auctions.

Included on the list is an autographed Queensland State of Origin collectors jersey, Whitsunday holidays, passes to the Townsville V8 Supercars and a landscaping package.

Sunrise Rotary Club president Janice Nelson said the club was committed to delivering an event better than last year.

“Guest are encouraged to come and enjoy an evening of fun, dance and community spirit while helping raise funds for the nominated charities,” she said.

This year's charities are Lifeline, YIRS, The Salvation Army and the Mental Illness Fellowship.

MACKAY Sunrise Rotary Club has pledged almost $4000 to help residents in flood-struck Rockhampton and Emerald, which are part of its Rotary district.

Club president Janice Nelson said members had seen many fellow Rotarians and business colleagues affected in the Rockhampton and Emerald areas, which formed part of their Rotary district.

The club had no hesitation in making the pledge, she said.

“We are part of District 9570 and have watched helplessly as many colleagues have had their places inundated by the floodwaters,” Ms Nelson said.

“One member has even handed over about $450 that he raised from his Christmas Lights display.”

At its meeting on Friday morning, members of the Mackay Sunrise Rotary Club agreed to allocate funds raised from club fines and raffles to Central Queensland flood relief efforts, Ms Nelson said.

“Many of us experienced the floods of 2008 and the devastation of Cyclone Ului, so we simply wanted to do what we could immediately to get our neighbours back on their feet.”

Members of the Mackay Sunrise Rotary Club have responded to a call for volunteers to repair fencing destroyed by the floods in Central Queensland.

Ms Nelson said Rotarians throughout the Mackay district had been assigned to different locations to help farmers repair fencing and irrigation, as well as general property rehabilitation.

The club sent its donation to District 9570 governor Judith Henderson, who was based in Yeppoon and would distribute funds to some of the worst affected areas, she said.

Mackay Sunrise Rotary Club holds meetings at the Ocean International from 7am every Friday.

District 9570 includes Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and many of the western townships that have been affected by flood.

Pride In Workmanship Awards

Pride in Workmanship Awards
Five women, who go the extra mile to achieve excellence have been recognised by Sunrise Rotary in the 2010 Pride of Workmanship awards.
A Rotary Vocational Service project, the awards recognise employees who demonstrate a high work ethic and are committed to doing that little bit extra to achieve results in their chosen fields.
Sunrise Rotary President Janice Nelson said the women epitomize the ideal employee. “These women display professionalism, a helpful attitude and attention to detail,” she said.
The 2010 recipients are: Jane Casey and Rebecca Enright from Jade Corporate, Lesley Devitt from Mackay Canegrowers, Flo Ruggeri from Mackay City Cabs and Deirdre Shailer from Pioneer Pre-school and Kindergarten.

Jane Casey and Rebecca Enright were nominated for vastly different reasons by their employer Jade Corporate. Ms Casey’s background in customer service has seen her boost the training services area of the company by 400 per cent since joining the company.
Rebecca Enright shows a maturity and loyalty beyond her years. Recently named the 2010 Mackay Foundation Ambassador, Rebecca has excelled in her role to be promoted as a Manager at Jade Corporate and provides exceptional service to her customers and staff.

As a former taxi owner, Flo Ruggeri has seen the good, bad and absolute worst within the community. For the past 20 years, she has displayed a courteous, friendly disposition whilst working in the taxi switch room. Ms Ruggeri was nominated for her remarkable kindness and willingness to help – even in the most trying and difficult circumstances.
Lesley Devitt is not one to seek accolades, but her undying devotion to the Canegrowers organisation and management team is largely behind her Pride of Workmanship award.

Janice Nelson said it was important to pay homage to colleagues who display an exemplary work ethic. “Rotary is about giving back to the community and these awards are a symbolic way of rewarding those who go beyond the call of duty in what they do,” she said.
